Happy Labor Day 2019

DID YOU KNOW?::

• The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday September 5, 1882 in New York City.  10,000 workers took unpaid leave and marched in a parade that ended with a concert, speeches, and a picnic.

• Before Labor Day, the average American worked 12 hours a day and 7 days a week.
• Children, as young as 5 years old, were part of the work force.

• Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a holiday in 1887.
• Congress passed an act, on June 28^th, 1894, making the first Monday in September a legal holiday in DC and the territories.

• The Adamson Act of 1916 established the 8 hour day and was the first federal law regulating working hours of private companies.
