- The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday September 5, 1882 in New York City. 10,000 workers took unpaid leave and marched in a parade that ended with a concert, speeches, and a picnic.
- Before Labor Day, the average American worked 12 hours a day and 7 days a week.
- Children, as young as 5 years old, were part of the work force.
- Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a holiday in 1887.
- Congress passed an act, on June 28th, 1894, making the first Monday in September a legal holiday in DC and the territories.
- The Adamson Act of 1916 established the 8 hour day and was the first federal law regulating working hours of private companies.
